In the future, mankind expands through the galaxy, and corporations race to exploit every planet they can. You are the employee of Blackwater Industries ("Putting profit before people.") given the task of running a series of off-world colonies. You must manage both the base and the personnel which inhabit and run this base. This task is complicated by the fact that the colonists are all rejects from society, and will cause problems of one sort or another.

Space Colony is both a strategy game and a personality management simulation. Think Stronghold (Fireflys earlier game) and The Sims combined, then put it in space. You will have to set up resource harvesting, resource processing, recreation facilities, tourist facilities, military installations, and such to keep your colonists happy/productive, defend the base, and make money. The colonists have a shift cycle, how long they will work is directly affected by how happy they are, so it pays to have a good base.

What makes this game distinct is that each colonist has a unique personality. There are around twenty colonists which will populate your base in one mission or another. Each colonist has personal likes and dislikes, some are social, others will pick fights; you have to achieve a balance. There are a number of game modes, Career Mode, Galaxy Mode, Sandbox Mode, and you can play user-created maps. In individual missions, you will have to compete against rival corporations or aliens for domination of the planet you are exploiting. Once you have stripped the planet bare, you will move on again, and start the process over again.

Sword of the Stars II: Lords of Winter is a huge disappointment. After more than a dozen patches as of this review, it remains a buggy, difficult-to-play mess, prone to multiple crash bugs and freezes, obscured by unclear mechanics, and bereft of helpful guidance. Even if you have a great deal of patience and a professed love of deep strategy games set in space, you should avoid Sword of the Stars II until developer Kerberos Productions has fixed the unfinished product it's currently selling.

The basic structure of this 4X (explore, expand, exploit, exterminate) space game blends turn-based strategizing with real-time combat. The turn-based portion is all about exploring the galaxy and building your empire. Activities here include designing ships, building space stations, creating fleets, researching new technologies, engaging in diplomacy, managing your economy, colonizing worlds, and plotting your next move. The real-time proceedings are all about blasting your enemy into cosmic dust or preserving your own forces against overwhelming odds. As the game progresses, a rhythm develops in the turn-based portion as you check in on your economy, your fleets, and your tech status, and then balance all of this in your intergalactic checkbook. It’s here where you build your grand strategy for winning the game, though this is far from an easy task thanks to the technical issues and poor interface.

One of the game's greatest frustrations is that it doesn't teach you how to play it. It lacks a tutorial, and even the seasoned strategists at whom the game is targeted would benefit from something that walked you through its confusing systems. A downloadable beginner's guide and some basic tutorial screens were patched in, but even with this help, Sword of the Stars II is often baffling. The various information screens for your economy and starship design are similarly arcane. The graphs that show the differences between weapons are small and difficult to understand. This makes deciding which weapons you want to install on your starships perplexing; the game doesn't do a good job of explaining how the different types of damage affect potential targets or the power drains (and other costs) of using such weapons. Easy-to-digest information is the lifeblood of strategy games, and Sword of the Stars II fails to present it to you properly.

WorldShift is an intriguing real-time strategy experiment, with a weird far-future story and three complementary races. It also has a wide range of solo, co-op, and Deathmatch modes of play, which means that it comes with plenty under the hood. Unfortunately, the gameplay itself is mired in the past. Although the multiplayer games have been intricately designed with a lot of strategic depth and many elements borrowed from massively multiplayer online games, much of this has been wasted on a boring point-and-click RTS that seems to have traveled through time from 1997. This problem, along with a range of serious single-player bugs, make the game look better on paper than it is in reality.

Worldshift's storyline, backdrop, and three factions are almost surreal. The time is the far future and the place is Earth long after an asteroid called Shard Zero went all 2012 to create a plague that destroyed and reshaped the entire planet. Everything has changed so much that the game might as well be taking place on an alien world. Flora and fauna consist of extraterrestrial additions like the sort of giant exotic plants that decorated the strange new worlds in old Star Trek episodes. Huge mushrooms can be found all over the place in some maps, and many are big enough to house hundreds of Smurfs, along with sinister-looking refugees from the Little Shop of Horrors. Overall, the look of the game is odd and effective, succeeding in transporting you to a colorful take on the future even while the repetitive, generic RTS order acknowledgements and corny militaristic music often beam you right back home.

Modes of play have obviously been built around multiplayer. You need to log in online whenever you start the game, whether you are entering the single-player campaign, playing cooperative missions, or taking on all comers in Deathmatch modes that range from mano-a-mano games to three-versus-three team contests. Finding an online match isn't particularly easy, though. Few seem to be playing either Deathmatch or co-op, although if you stick around for an hour or so, you can likely find a game. It's something of a shame that more people aren't playing online, too, because it features some really good ideas taken from MMOGs like World of Warcraft and multiplayer role-playing games like Diablo. Co-op maps let you team up with two buddies to scrap your way through levels, taking on computer-controlled mobs and bosses with big loot. The one drawback is that games often suffer from noticeable lag.

The three sci-fi/fantasy mash-up factions featured here have also been designed extremely well for multiplayer matchups. Humans come from five big cities that survived the cataclysm, employing battle robots and armored troops. Tribes consist of mutated humans living in the wild that use fantasy-standard weapons and magic. Here, you deal with shamans, spear-throwing heathens, and the like. And the Cult is an alien civilization that features units with shape-changing abilities and futuristic hardware. This trio fits together very well because each comes with pluses and minuses that you need to deal with in multiplayer matches. They also have a variety of troop types that use very similar melee and ranged attacks. The rock-paper-scissors formula is solid here. Factions also have unique looks, so you can always tell who's who at a glance. There isn't a huge range of units available to each side, although there are enough to keep things interesting and force you to rely on tactical planning during matches.
